The Loop Japanese Grocery & Kitchen by Hachiroku is coming soon to The Audubon New Haven development at 367 Orange Street!
The new restaurant will occupy the former El Segundo space in the development, a latin street food restaurant that opened in 2020 and closed in 2023. El Segundo's Norwalk location is still open. The Japanese market & restaurant will feature a small grocery sections along with a small dining room. The restaurant portion will be mostly takeout, with traditional Japanese cuisine similar to that found in their other locations. Hachiroku has 2 other New Haven locations including Hachiroku Shokudo & Sake Bar at 261 Orange Street and Hachiroku Handroll Bar & Tapas at 966 State Street. Just Salad will be opening their second and third locations in Connecticut! The popular chain of inventive salads, wraps, and bowls will be opening new locations in Westport and Norwalk; joining the existing Greenwich location.
-Westport, Just Salad will be opening at 275 Post Road in Westport! The new location will replace Salsa Fresca in their space, Just Salad confirmed the lease of the restaurant. Salsa Fresca is currently still open; their corporate did not respond to request for comment. Just Salad joins other new tenants Waxing the City and Innovations Luggage. This location is expected to open before the end of the year! -Norwalk, Just Salad will be opening at 644 Main Avenue in Norwalk! The new location will occupy 2/3 of the former Bank of America building. The restaurant will feature a patio. They plan to open in the first quarter of 2025. The brand is expanding their Connecticut footprint and is scouting for additional locations throughout the State. Nikki's Dog House will be opening a second location of their famed hot dog shop in Storrs! The exact location of the new shop is not yet known.
Nikki's Dog House is a mainstay in Putnam, the original location at 5 Canal Street in Putnam has been serving up hot dogs since 1980. The restaurant serves hot dogs (of course), hamburgers, a variety of sandwiches, tacos, salads, Moo Cups (ice cream), and Moo Shakes! The owners, Erica and Larry Groh, took over the landmark restaurant in November 2023. The couple purchased the restaurant from the family of the original owners. Stay tuned for more information on the location and opening! Baker & The Brew will be closing their East Windsor coffee shop on May 31st. The coffee shop has been up for sale for awhile, and has been publicly searching for a new owner.
The Coffee shop is located at 2 North Road in East Windsor, inside Sofia's Plaza. The coffee shop has been bought out by another local coffee shop according to a post from an employee. A new coffee shop is expected to open in the space in the coming months. Stay tuned for the opening announcement. The shop will be open until this Friday, May 31st will be the final day of business. They are currently selling bottles of their coffee flavoring for $5 each while supplies last. There is a new coffee shop in Deep River!
Deep River Roasters is NOW OPEN at 159 Main Street in Deep River! This is the second location for the brand, the original location is in the Centerbrook section of Essex at 6 Main Street. The coffee shop replaces The Spot, a coffee / bubble tea / smoothie shop that opened in 2021 and closed in summer of 2023 when the owners moved to Florida. Deep River Roasters started in 2018 as a micro-roastery inside Witch Hazel Works in Centerbrook and has now grown to include this new location! -MINISO is coming soon to Westfarms in West Hartford/Farmington! The store is under construction in the former Oakley space in center court! The store will be located between Icing and Aeropostale. They are scheduled to open this summer. -MINISO is also coming soon to Holyoke Mall at Ingleside in Holyoke! The store is under construction in the Dollar N Things store space on the top level! They will open near Charlotte Russe this summer. This will be MINISO's second Connecticut location, with their Norwalk store opening in 2022. The new Holyoke location will be their fifth location in Mass, the first in Western Mass. The chain has Mass locations in Peabody, Natick, Burlington, and Braintree. The chain has 6,115 stores globally and over 100 locations in the United States. A new burger restaurant is coming soon to Meriden!
Moose's Burgers is coming soon to 1140 East Main Street in Meriden, the former Mi Puebla Mexican Cuisine space. The burger shop will serve fresh hamburgers with a variety of sides! Their mission is to offer top-notch products, many of which are crafted in-house, all at the best prices possible. The restaurant plans a soft opening in June. The restaurant will be owned by Meriden-residents Carrie Teele and Darrell Lucas. Make sure you check them out when they open next month! Bob's Stores Footwear & Apparel will be closing their Southington store after only 7 months of operation! The store opened in October at the RK Queen Plaza at 835 Queen Street, replacing Bed Bath & Beyond.
The official comment from a company spokesperson reads: 'As a result of challenging economic conditions, Bob’s Stores and Eastern Mountain Sports have made the difficult decision to close five underperforming stores.
We are actively working to relocate as many employees as possible from these impacted locations to nearby Bob’s and Eastern Mountain Sports stores. These closings have been a challenging yet necessary step to ensure the longevity of the company. We are grateful for the hard work and dedication of all our employees and will continue to serve our loyal customers who have known and loved our brands for decades.' The store is facing eviction from their store in Southington due to unpaid fees to the landlord according to a lawsuit filed by their landlord RK Centers. The chain has hired SB360 Capital Partners to run a ‘Total Inventory Blowout’ sale at all their Bob’s and EMS locations, all sales are final. SB360 is expected to run the store closing sales at these locations. Big Y World Class Market is NOW OPEN in Brookfield! The grocery store is located at 14 Candlewood Lake Road, in the Candlewood Lake Plaza! A grand opening celebration is planned for June 6th.
The new Big Y store is one of 3 Connecticut stores they will open this year. The chain will open a new location in Middletown on June 20th and a new location in Westport this fall. The Brookfield and Westport locations were originally slated to be Amazon Fresh stores, though Amazon sold the leases to Big Y earlier this year. The new store will be smaller than typical Big Y stores. The new store has a 40,000 square foot space; while normal stores are 55-60,000 square feet. The new store will have the normal departments like meat, deli, bakery, sandwich shop, pizza shop, cafe, seafood, and more. Wingstop is planning a new location, this time in Bristol!
The chicken wing restaurant recently leased a yet-to-be constructed space at 1235 Farmington Avenue in Bristol, Bristol Farms Plaza. The new space will be constructed on the side of Hobby Lobby. The owner of the franchise will be Bristol Wings LLC, the principals of the business are Bimalkumar Thakkar and Jitendrakumar Patel. Thakkar and Patel own Wingstops in Danbury, Wallingford, Hamden, Derby, and Waterbury. Thakkar also owns a number of Subway and Wayback Burger franchises. No timeline has been announced for the project. Wingstop is currently expanding their Connecticut presence. The chain will be opening locations in New Britain and Wethersfield. Sayulita is NOW OPEN in their new location at 30 Main Street in the Centerbrook section of Essex! The new restaurant is owned by a trio including William Driggs, Brian Williams, and Joshua Packtor.
The upscale Mexican restaurant has opened in the former Los Charros restaurant space in the plaza. The restaurant is known for their inventive twist on Mexican food featuring tacos, burritos, fajitas, salads, tamales, platos, and much more! Sayulita's original location is in Glastonbury at 865 Main Street. One of the owners, William Driggs, also owned 2 Hopewell Bistro and Tavern in Glastonbury. Co-owner, Brian Williams, owns Cantina Azul Tequila with Driggs, the tequila brand can be found at stores and restaurants throughout Connecticut. Check them out at 30 Main Street in Essex, just in time for your summer beach trips! Crumbl Cookies has closed their Norwalk location after just over a year of operation! The cookie shop opened in April of 2023 at 360 Connecticut Avenue in Norwalk; Shoprite Plaza.
The cookie chain opened to great fanfare in April 2023, but according to one former employee, the business didn't stay. The chain has locations in nearby Fairfield and Stamford. The chain is known for their massive cookies and new weekly flavors. The chain has close to 1,000 stores across the country, with 9 locations in Connecticut. The shops are located in West Hartford, Manchester, Milford, Avon, Fairfield, Danbury, North Haven, and newly opened locations in Stamford and Shelton. A new location is planned for Newington at Meadow Commons, in a statement from the company's representative, the new location is now planned to open in March 2025 due to construction delays. Two new restaurants are coming soon to Waterbury! A halal-steakhouse is planned for a vacant Italian restaurant and a new latin-fusion chain is planned for an old cajun restaurant!
-Kanoon Smoked Meats and Steakhouse is coming soon to the former Nino's Trattoria at 91 Scott Road! This will be the restaurant's third location, with existing locations in New Jersey. The restaurant LLC, Kanoon 3 CT LLC, is owned by Husameddin Daoud, Abdalghani A Elejjo, and Ahmad Alissa. No timeline has been announced for the opening. -Mamajuana Cafe is coming soon to the former Red Crab Juicy Seafood / Ninety Nine restaurant at 950 Wolcott Street! The restaurant has completely gutted and renovated the former restaurant including a new main entrance. The restaurant now has 9 locations throughout the United States, this will be the first in Connecticut. They plan to open this summer! Crystal Mall could soon be put on the market! Namdar, the owner of the struggling mall, recently stated that the property could be sold or redeveloped.
The statement came from Namdar, which said they were exploring a number of options for the property including selling, redeveloping, or partnering with a developer to develop the property. The mall has struggled in recent years, losing countless tenants including Sears, Macy's, Bed Bath & Beyond, Christmas Tree Shop, H&M, and soon to be JC Penney. JC Penney's last day of operation is planned to be this Saturday, the store opened with the mall in 1984. The mall currently has 47 tenants including Victoria's Secret, Talbots, Finishline, Bath & Body Works (leaving this year), Forever 21, FYE, Hot Topic, Spencers, Lenscrafters, The Toy Vault, Shoe Dept Encore, and more. Namdar owns 4 malls in Connecticut including the struggling Enfield Square, the struggling Meriden Mall, and Trumbull Mall. They are currently under contract to sell their Enfield Square Mall in Enfield to a new ownership group. The new owners would demolish the entire mall, except Target, and build a new mixed use development. 450 Luxury apartments, 2 hotels, new retail space, and much more is planned. The deal hinges on new financing being secured through the State. The hardware store occupies a portion of the former Kmart that closed in 2014. The store is located between Planet Fitness and Ocean State Job Lot. We broke the news in December that Harbor Freight would be joining the shopping plaza this spring. The new space is 23,000 square feet, a larger store than typical Harbor Freights. Geissler's Supermarket will acquire Simsbury’s Fitzgerald's Foods!
Geissler’s Supermarket will take over Fitzgerald’s Foods at 710 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury! The family owned supermarket will purchase the store from the DeVoe family in mid-June and will begin operation of the store shortly after. Geissler’s will retain all the existing employees including the DeVoes when they take over operation next month. This will be the store’s 8th location including South Windsor, East Windsor, Windsor, Agawam, Granby, Somers, and Bloomfield. Geissler’s started in 1923 in Broad Brook, CT as a small food store, the store expanded into neighboring towns. Fitzgerald’s had a similar origin, starting as a small store in 1946 after the owner got home from the war. A new multi-tenant plaza is coming soon! The new building will be located at 143 River Road in Lisbon, land next to Chili's.
The new tenants for the plaza include a new drive-thru Starbucks, GoHealth Urgent Care, and Metro Mattress (a fast growing mattress chain with 13 locations in Connecticut.) There will be one more retail space available for lease in the building. Construction is now underway on the project. The Starbucks inside Target is expected to remain once this location opens, the licensed store inside Target is operated by Target, not a corporate-run store. The new store is located at 840 South Main Street in Middletown! The new building features Big Y’s newest prototype, similar to their Clinton location. The new store will have the sandwich and pizza stations, sushi, wings, meat department, seafood department, bakery, and more! Big Y plans two more Connecticut locations this year. A new location in Brookfield will open this summer; and another in Westport will open this fall. Both of those new stores were built for Amazon Fresh store before they sold their leases to Big Y. The new store sells rustic home decor with a bit of vintage in the mix! The store is owned by two women, Anderson and Carlson, both families have been around Granby since early 1900s! The store has a ton of cool stuff for your home! Selling home decor, dishware, kitchen items, candles, and much more! The store just opened on May 2nd! They are located in Granby Center at 10 Hartford Avenue, next door to Granby Barber Shop. The store is open Thursday and Friday 11-4, and Saturday 10-4. Make sure you check them out! Sonic Drive In is NOW OPEN in Torrington! The new location of the popular car-hop chain is located at 861 Migeon Avenue, the former Scarpelli’s Restaurant.
The restaurant is part of a new building including a gas station and 7 Eleven convenience store. The new location does not offer the typical drive in service, only drive thru and instore service will be available. The restaurant has been a longtime coming. Plans were originally approved in 2019 to replace the former restaurant with this development. Construction began shortly after, but was delayed due to the pandemic. Sonic now has 7 locations throughout Connecticut including Manchester, Danbury, Milford, New Milford, Bristol, Wallingford, and now Torrington. Five Guys, Jersey Mikes, Starbucks, GoHealth Urgent Care, and Aspen Dental are coming soon to Killingly!
A new development is coming soon at 536-552 Hartford Pike! The new development will include a new 12,580 square foot building to be home to all these retailers. A drive thru is planned for the end cap for Starbucks. The site is located near Killingly Commons, the commercial center of town. The project was approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission in November 2023. Construction is planned to accelerate soon! Building permits were issued for the project earlier this year for the base building and tenant fitouts! IHOP is planning a new location in New London! The breakfast giant will move into the former Outback / Shaking Crab / Restaurant Junction building at 305 North Frontage Road.
The building would be renovated inside to match IHOP's brand design including the removal of the large bar, new furnishings, new lighting, and the creation of 2 new dining rooms that can function as private event rooms. The project is currently in the bidding process of construction, the restaurant would open later this year. The restaurant would be owned by Gulshan Soni and Deepak Verma. Outback Steakhouse closed their doors in June 2020, was replaced with Shaking Crab, and later Restaurant Junction. Restaurant Junction was a short-lived concept that combined multiple food options under one roof including Shaking Crab Cajun, Bubbly Bubble Boba, Wow! Burger & Sandwiches, Olive Tree Greek, Cocina De Mama Spanish, Rice Bowl Desi Cuisine, and Fit to Eat Health Foods. |
