 The Kmart in Vernon will close in late March according to documents filed by Sears today. The store was not initially on the closing list published in October. Kmart is closing their Vernon store as the retailer struggles to survive to 2019. The Vernon Kmart is one of two surviving Kmarts in Connecticut, with the other being located in Watertown. Kmart had area locations in Manchester, Windsor, Cromwell, Milford, and many others. Kmart's parent company, Sears, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy this fall, a bidder had until 5pm tonight to file a bid to buy the company or it faces complete liquidation. Former CEO and current chairman Edward Lampert placed a $4.6 billion deal to purchase Sears (and remaining associated brands) in a very last minute deal that saved the struggling company for now. The deal has not been finalized, but employees and loyal shoppers are hopeful. The closing was filed today, and The Manchester Scoop was the first to report on this pending closure. Sears has been safe from the recent closures, and the store (including Vernon Kmart) made it on the Go Forward Store list. Its unclear as to why the Vernon store is now closing when the store was on a list of the best 504 stores in the company.
