I took a trip down to Olde Mistick Village at 27 Coogan Boulevard in Mystic, CT. The village is made up of local shops and restaurants in the style of a New England village. The site was originally planned to be home to a shopping mall when Martin Olson purchased the land in 1963; but eventually the 1720s-style village was built on the land and became a destination for locals and tourist alike. The village is located next door to Mystic Aquarium and a short ride from Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino. The village is home to many unique and small businesses including an Alice in Wonderland theme coffee shop, tea shop, ghost-themed bookstore, magic wand store, gift shops, general stores, and many more. Notable businesses include: -The Cloak and Wand, Harry Potter-esque wand & novelty store -Alice in the Village, An Alice in Wonderland themed coffee shop -Alice’s Haunted Little Bookshop, A ghost themed bookstore -Sofia's Mystical Christmas, Year round Christmas shop -Toy Soldier, Toy store -The Rusty Relic, Antiques and Primitives -Pop On The Block, A popcorn store -Franklin's General Store, An old fashioned general store -The BoardWalk, Gift Shop and Boardwalk-food purveyor -Deviant Craft Coffee & Donuts, Donut and coffee shop -Mango's Wood-Fired Pizza Co., Pizza and other Italian favorites Find a full list of their stores here: https://oldemistickvillage.com/ The outdoor village was the setting for a Hallmark movie in 2023. They are famous for their fried cheese on their cheeseburgers that National chains have attempted to replicate. The restaurant is located at 840 Middle Turnpike West in Manchester, on the Bolton line.
The restaurant and ice cream parlor started in 1948 by John and Bernice Rieg, farmers who wanted to expand their farm to include ice cream. With the help of UConn's flourishing Agricultural school, the farm formulated their now well-known ice cream. The restaurant expanded to a second location at The Mancheter Parkade in 1965. The restaurant was transferred to longtime manager William Hoch after the original owner's deaths in the 2000s. The restaurant is now run by William Hoch's son. The restaurant closed their satelite location at the Manchester Parkade in 2020 during the COVID shutdown. The eatery has been featured in National media, like their feature in Food Network's 'The Best Thing I Ever Ate' in 2010. The ice cream is almost as well known as their signature cheese! They serve a variety of flavors with some seasonal changes including my favorite, Peppermint Stick (only available in the winter.) Their icecream is sold in grocery stores throughout the region including Shoprite, Highland Park Market, & Big Y stores. Their dining room is also a major draw, the layout features a labyrinth of booths and seating, designed around the service of their patrons. The retro dining room has an old fashion soda fountain where staff make sodas the old fashion way, stirring in carbonated water into flavored syrup. This place is unlike anything you will find in the State! Worth a visit! The restaurant only takes cash, but there is an ATM onsite for those with card only. Stop by and give them a try! Let’s check out Connecticut’s two local marketplaces! The Shops at Riverton and The Shops at New Hartford!
The Shops at New Hartford is located at 37 Greenwoods Road, on the fourth floor of the former Ovation Guitar building. The building is an extraordinary destination that supports local vendors nestled in the charming town. The commitment to quality is evident, as each of the over 50 vendors provides unique, must-have items that you never knew you needed. It's nearly impossible not to discover a treasure that you'll cherish forever while simultaneously supporting local talent. The owners began their venture with the sister store, The Shops at Riverton, located in the historic Old Hitchcock furniture building in Riverton, CT. The Shops at Riverton is located at 2 School Street. Like their sister location, The Shops at Riverton is made of a large variety of small artisan vendors, providing unique items and gifts! Both of The Shops are more than just a market; their welcoming atmosphere ensures that every visit is an enjoyable and memorable experience. The Shops host a variety of events, from baby goat cuddles to live music, so be sure to follow them on Facebook and Instagram (tagged above) to stay up-to-date on their exciting happenings. Both The Shops at New Hartford and The Shops at Riverton offer an amazing day out and are well worth a trip to Northwest Connecticut. Add these unique shopping experiences to your travel plans today! The Shops at New Hartford and The Shops at Rivertom are both open Wednesday thru Sunday from 10am-6pm. P.S. Don’t miss the baby goats in New Hartford on February 8th and 9th from 11-4! Bring the kids! (Pardon the goat pun.) For this hidden gem, I ventured into Old Wethersfield, Connecticut; I have always heard it is the cutest New England Village. I finally had some free time to visit with my friend to check it out.
It is definitely a quaint little village, complete with Old Wethersfield Country Store, an ice cream shop / coffee shop named Main Street Creamery & Cafe, a seed and small produce market called Heirloom Market at Comstock Ferre, many restaurants, museums, a toy store, gift shops, and even a new gelato place called NOCI. It's a great place to spend a day! Make sure you check it out! Have you ever been to Old Wethersfield? What is your favorite store/eatery? Comment Below! |
