The XL Center will now be known as the PeoplesBank Arena! The naming rights were recently purchased by Peoplesbank. Peoples Bank is a Massachusetts-based bank with 5 locations in Connecticut, and at least 2 new locations planned in Hartford and New Britain. The arena is currently undergoing over $145 million of renovations to bring the aging structure into the 21 century. The renovations include luxury suites, boxes, retrofitted loading docks for larger shows, and improved concessions areas. The arena was also previously known as the Hartford Civic Center. It originally opening in 1975 as Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The roof famously collapsed 3 years after its opening, due to a blizzard. No one was injured and it reopened roughly 2 years later.
