The Federal Government has picked Downtown Hartford as the preferred location for the new Federal Courthouse.
The new courthouse would be built at 154 Allyn Street in Downtown Hartford. The site currently home to a 2.2 acre parkling lot owned by Shelbourne, Downtown Hartford's largest office landlord. The new courthouse would be 281,000 square feet; including 11 courtrooms, 18 Chambers for Judge's, and offices for other court agencies. The site would also have 66 secure parking spaces. Nearly $335 million has been authorized for the purchasing of the site, design, and construction of the courthouse. Other Hartford sites that were considered include 61 Woodland Street (currently a State Office Building) and 201 Hudson Street (A parking lot and auto detail shop.) The Hudson Street site was poised for a mixed-use development which recently fell through due to financing. The final decision for the location is expected to be announced in June. The courthouse is expected to break ground in 2027 and be completed in 2030.
