We are learning more about a new grocery store planned for the former LA Fitness at 46 Skiff Street in Hamden! Could it be Trader Joe’s?
The new grocery will only take a portion of the building, only 12,500 square feet of the former gym will be converted into the store. Not many specialty grocery stores have that small of a footprint; except Trader Joe’s. We have not been able to confirm the name of the new specialty grocery store. The size of the space matches Trader Joe’s latest prototype, including the new store coming to Shelton. Developer Benderson, behind the plans for the Hamden site, is known for the connection to TJ’s. The developer has proposed similar grocery stores in other areas of the country. Read about a similar project here: https://tinyurl.com/3yckjbwd The project would see the former gym subdivided into the new grocery store and other available space. New parking lot improvements and a new store facade are planned. Again, Trader Joe’s has not been confirmed for the space; but it is a strong possibility. Stay tuned as we continue digging and tracking this project.

If true, the bottleneck called Skiff Street will be even more of a headache. The easiest way to get to the Plaza-Mart from Whitney Ave will be the Merritt Parkway! Watch out Thornton, Connolly, Greenway residents.
