The Town will be demolishing the Tong Building on Main Street this November. The building at 942 Main Street was purchased by the town in March of 2023 for $1.75 million with plans to demolish the building for a future development on the site. The town is currently bidding the demolition and hazardous material removal from the site. Bids for the project are due this Friday, with the demolition planned for November. The project is broken into 2 phases: Phase 1; Mobilization, and demolition of entire building…All demolition debris to be pushed into basement within perimeter foundation walls, including but not limited to roof top equipment, roof, walls, partitions, and interior contents. All demolished material shall remain in place until removal during phase 2. Concrete floor slab is to be broken up. Perimeter concrete foundation walls (including concrete, masonry, and steel) to be removed to 4” (inches) +/- below grade. No concrete, masonry or steel shall be protruding above grade. Phase 1 work also includes the removal of all hazmat, asbestos, and pcb items within this area. Site shall be left fully demobilized except for the perimeter construction fence and completed demolition within fence perimeter. IMPORTANT: PHASE 1 WORK MUST BE COMPLETED NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 15, 2024. Phase 2; RE-mobilization, and debris removal…All demolition debris to be removed. Phase 2 work also includes complete backfill and site restoration (fence removal and sidewalk repairs). The town has worked to relocate the former tenants of the building. Former tenants included Manchester Chinese Cuisine, Family Appliance, Bea Hive Salon, Connecti-Cuts, and Luna Day Spa. Manchester Chinese Cuisine will be moving in with Sukhothai at 841 Main Street; reopening in October. The BeaHive Salon moved to 295 East Center Street, in Lenox Plaza. Family Appliance moved to 77 Tolland Turnpike. Connecti-Cuts moved to 983 Main Street. Luna Day Spa closed their doors, opting not to relocate.
